Overview

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, happens when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus.

Symptoms

Heartburn, regurgitation, chest discomfort, and difficulty swallowing.

Causes

A weakened muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that allows acid to escape the stomach.

Diagnosis

Diagnosed based on symptoms, and sometimes confirmed with an endoscopy.

Treatment

Lifestyle changes and medications that reduce stomach acid are common treatments.

Prevention

Avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and not lying down right after eating can help.
