Headache

Updated September 2026

Overview

A headache is pain anywhere in the head or face. Most are primary headaches — tension-type, migraine or cluster — meaning the headache is the condition itself rather than a symptom of something else.

Symptoms of Headache

Dull, aching pressure across the head in tension-type headache; throbbing pain on one side with nausea and light sensitivity in migraine; severe pain around one eye with tearing or a blocked nose in cluster headache.

What Causes Headache?

Common triggers include stress, poor sleep, dehydration, skipped meals, eye strain, caffeine withdrawal, alcohol, and hormonal changes. Secondary headaches can stem from infection, medication overuse, or injury.

How is Headache Diagnosed?

Usually diagnosed from the pattern of pain and a physical exam. Imaging is reserved for headaches that are sudden and severe, change in pattern, or come with neurological symptoms.

Treatment for Headache

Over-the-counter pain relief, rest in a dark quiet room, and hydration for most episodes. Recurring migraine may be managed with triptans or preventive medication.

How to Prevent Headache

Regular sleep and meals, staying hydrated, managing stress, limiting alcohol and caffeine, and keeping a diary to identify personal triggers.
